My honors experience for the spring of 2018 was a class called “Why Superman Matters: A History of Comics in Modern America”. It was a class that analyzed the effects of the comic book industry on American history. We began the course by talking about the beginning of comics, analyzing the first comics of Superman. We then moved to more modern comics, and with them more modern issues. Issues such as race, gender, and equality were talked about through the scope of comic books and how they approached these topics. I think that this class was very beneficial for me because it made me look at history in a different way. It made me realize that how history was recorded was almost as important as the events of history themselves. Looking at the events of history through something as interesting to me as comic books sparked a passion for learning not only how history affected comic books, but how comic books affected history as well. I was able to take something that I enjoy and use it to analyze America through different decades, learning about things that happened years before I was born. I believe that, for these reasons, this class was extremely beneficial for me.
