Over this past fall semester, I took an honors class called Multivariable Calculus, a class that is required for my Mechanical Engineering degree. It was just like other Multivariable Calculus courses, except that the learning is accelerated. We learned more chapters a week than the other classes, and went more in depth with certain chapters. I think that this acceleration in learning attributed to some of the most important lessons that I learned in that course. I think the most important lesson that I learned in that class was the importance of taking notes and following along with the professor. I know this seems like an obvious thing to do when you are taking classes, but sometimes that is not the case. With today's technology, sometimes people tend undermine the importance of in-class learning because there is so much information online. However, this course reminded me of the value that the professors give the information. It is so much easier to interpret and apply the skills and problem solving taught in class when you take good notes and pay attention to the professor, and I was reminded of this in Multivariable Calculus because, after the first quiz, I realized how much of a help good notes and following along were, and I will take this reminder with me throughout the rest of my college career.
This course helped me in part because of how challenging it was. It was a very challenging course, especially because it was so intense in the learning and it was very difficult material to learn. I have always had trouble with learning math, not because I do not understand it, but because it takes awhile for me to be able to take concepts and apply them to certain situations. To help myself with this, I took pictures in class of the problems so that I could review them and better understand how concepts were used to solve them. A sample of one of these pictures is below. Because of how challenging this class was, I was able to push myself to learn better, which will help me in the long run with my other classes and into my career.
