Self - Design Experience Showcase - Bearcat Motorsports Underclassmen Coordinator
For this experience, I was the Underclassmen Coordinator for the Bearcat Motorsports team at University of Cincinnati. We are a team of students that designs, builds and then races a formula car against other schools. Because it is used for a senior design project, the underclassmen can sometimes have trouble finding ways to get involved. This year, I decided to help them get involved with the team and stay involved hopefully for years to come. I did this by having bi-weekly meetings with the underclassmen and asking the team what they had that could be a good project for the underclassmen. Throughout this experience, I learned things about both meeting planning and leadership. I learned how to plan a meeting with an agenda and how to lead that meeting. This is not something that I had ever had to do before, so it was a challenge at the beginning and I believed that I learned a lot from it. I also learned something about leadership during this experience. I learned that I must remember that the people I am leading are not the same as me. I learned that I had to change my approach to getting people involved because it was not as easy for them to just show up at an office full of strangers and ask what they need help with. When I realized this, I decided to ask the underclassmen what I could do to help them be more involved, and having their feedback helped me learn what they needed from me. This was a big learning moment for me, and one that I will take with me for years to come.
